I never thought of teaching as a career. My bachelor's degree from Baruch College was in Finance. Unfortunately, as much as I liked finance, business and Wall Street, I never worked in the field. But, about 20 years ago when my daughter was five, I read that her chances as a black child to learn to read were so slim, that I decided to teach her myself. My second daughter was one year younger. I taught her as well. So they were both fluent readers as they entered kindergarten. That is when I decided to become a teacher.
I had been a teacher for a few years. My daughters were both excellent and avid readers. Stephanie the oldest was an 8th grader, and was supposed to take the Math Regents Exam in April. Unfortunately, it was January, and she was failing the class. I was very concerned to say the least. I visited the teacher and asked: "What can I do to help Stephanie?" "Mr. Holly" she responded, "Some can do it and some can't!" I just refused to accept her prognosis, but I was stuck with her.
In my despair I prayed "Lord Help!" Before long I came across a professor who had developped a methodology of teaching math that proved extremely successful in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. After finding out that he was offering a Saturday math class at his church, I told him about my predicament, and begged him to let me bring Stephanie to him on Saturdays.
When he readily accepted, I added "But I have a 7th grader as well. May I bring her also?" "Bring them!" he said. I was excited, since I knew the results that his methodology had given. So we packed the car on Saturdays and went for two hours of math classes. I sat in the classroom with my daughters as the professor requested.
Though he taught nothing in math that I did not already know, I was immediately impressed with the way he presented the material. We continued to attend class every Saturday. I did the class work in my notebook and the homework like my daughters did. It became a Saturday ritual, and we went to McDonald's after class for lunch.
When Stephanie sat for the Math Regents Exam in April, she looked at the test and could not believe it. Was that all? She scored a perfect 100!
